The real difference is magnetic strength. Low-grade catches can feel adequate on a light door when first installed, then prove unreliable once hinges settle, the cabinet is moved or a door is shut with slightly less force. A stronger neodymium magnetic catch provides more useful holding power in a compact fitting. That is particularly valuable where space is limited or where the door has enough weight to overcome a standard ferrite catch.

Holding strength is not the only measure of a good catch. The fitting also needs a sensible mounting arrangement, a flat strike plate and enough tolerance to cope with ordinary variation in cabinet construction. A catch with impressive pull force can still disappoint if the magnet and plate do not meet squarely.

For most domestic cupboards, a moderate-strength magnetic catch is enough. Heavier timber doors, tall utility cupboards and doors fitted with firm hinges often benefit from higher pull performance. The aim is not to fit the strongest catch available. It is to use a catch that holds securely while allowing a comfortable opening action.

Where Magnetic Catches Perform Best

Magnetic catches are especially useful where a discreet closure is wanted without a visible latch. They suit cabinet doors, wardrobe panels, under-stair storage, workshop cupboards and display units. They are also a reliable option for doors where a traditional roller catch would be noisy, awkward to align or prone to wear.

They are not suitable for every job. A magnetic catch should not be treated as a security fitting, nor should it be relied on for a door subject to constant impact, vibration or heavy outward pressure. For a gate, a safety-critical enclosure or an externally exposed door, a mechanical latch is usually the better choice. In some applications, a magnetic catch can complement a latch, but it should not replace one where positive locking is required.

Choosing the Right Catch Strength

The first consideration is the door itself. Light MDF, plywood and cabinet-grade timber doors generally need less force than thick hardwood, glass-fronted or oversized doors. Door weight matters, but so does the force created by the hinges. Soft-close hinges, for example, can help a door settle into the catch, while sprung hinges may push it away from the cabinet unless the catch has sufficient pull.

Next, consider the gap. Magnetic force drops quickly as distance increases. A catch that is powerful when the strike plate touches the magnet will be far less effective if there is a gap caused by a bowed door, thick paint, uneven fixing or a poorly positioned plate. This is why accurate alignment often improves a catch more than simply choosing a stronger magnet.

The material of the strike plate also affects performance. A plain steel plate gives the magnet a suitable target. Non-magnetic metals such as aluminium, brass and most stainless steels will not provide the same attraction. If a door or frame uses these materials, use a compatible steel strike plate rather than assuming the magnet will hold directly to the surface.

For made-to-measure furniture, test one catch before ordering for every door. This is a small step that can prevent an entire run of doors from feeling either too loose or unnecessarily hard to open. Fitting a Magnetic Catch Properly

A good-quality catch cannot overcome careless positioning. Start by deciding whether the magnet body is best fitted to the cabinet frame or the door. In most cases, mounting it inside the cabinet frame keeps the installation tidy and protects it from knocks. The strike plate then fixes to the rear of the door.

Offer the door into its final closed position before marking anything. The catch and plate need to meet face-to-face, not at an angle or only along one edge. A slight offset may still create some attraction, but it reduces the effective hold and can make the door sit proud of the frame.

Check these points before tightening the screws:

  • The catch body is fixed to a solid, flat surface rather than a thin unsupported panel.
  • The strike plate lands centrally on the magnet when the door closes.
  • Screws are short enough that they will not break through the visible face of the door or cabinet.
  • The door closes flush without the catch forcing it out of line.

Pre-drilling pilot holes is worthwhile, especially in hardwood, MDF and laminated board. It reduces the risk of splitting, keeps the screws on position and makes final adjustment easier. Do not overtighten screws into plastic catch housings, as this can distort the body and affect alignment.

If the catch feels weak after fitting, do not immediately replace it. First inspect the contact point. A few millimetres of excess gap, a skewed strike plate or a small piece of debris on the magnet can be the cause. Repositioning the plate often produces a noticeably firmer closure.

Neodymium Magnetic Catches Versus Standard Options

Neodymium catches offer a much stronger magnetic field in a smaller format. This gives cabinet makers more flexibility where a compact fitting is needed, while providing a confident hold for heavier or frequently used doors. The trade-off is that a high-strength catch can feel too firm on a small, lightweight door. If users need to open the door many times a day, choosing excessive force can become inconvenient.

Mechanical roller catches and ball catches are alternatives where a physical detent is preferred. They can work well, but they have moving parts and may need adjustment as components wear. Magnetic catches are quieter and simpler, with no roller or spring mechanism to stiffen, loosen or jam. For internal cabinetry, that simplicity is often a strong reason to choose them.

Keeping Cabinet Closures Reliable

Once fitted, magnetic catches require very little maintenance. Wipe away sawdust, metal filings and general debris that can collect around the magnet, particularly in workshops. Check screw tightness occasionally on high-use doors, as repeated opening can gradually loosen fixings in softer boards.

Where painted cabinets are involved, allow fresh paint to cure fully before final adjustment. Paint build-up can alter the closing gap, and a catch fitted before the final coat may need a small repositioning afterwards. In humid areas, choose suitable fixings and inspect strike plates for corrosion, especially in utility rooms and unheated outbuildings.
